Welcome back to our Sweeney Todd Behind the Scenes Mini Series!!!! Today we are focusing on Costumes!! Costuming is such an important part of the overall visual impact of any performance as well as connecting the story with the historical context of any show. Many performers will tell you that they don't truly feel fully in the moment or in their characters until they put on their costumes. Costumes are what fully create the character, who they are, what status they have in life and what happens to them throughout the story. Costuming requires research and knowing the historical styles, colors and materials types that were used in whatever time period the play takes place in. Sometimes, directors like to get artistically creative and use costumes to symbolize a different time period than when the play was actually written, for example, setting a Shakespearian play in the 1970's! A costume designer needs to work with a director to understand their vision and then use their own creative abilities to create the visual impact they are striving for. Often times, costume designers will develop a color pattern or something significant and artistic that they are creating outside of just putting clothes on the actors. We are so grateful to our amazing costumers over the years, but especially right now to Lois Wood for all her time, talents and creativity!! For this show, she had the tremendous help of junior FHS student, Lily Tusi, as her assistant. Lily has been crucial in helping with organization, fittings and alterations. During the show, Lily will be working backstage, helping the actors with their quick changes. For someone with a really creative mind, who loves to sew, costuming can be an incredible avenue!!!
